John received his medical degree from Universidad del Valle Medical School (Cali, Colombia) in 1984. After receiving his medical degree, John started a health center in a remote region of the Colombian Amazon area. From 1990 to 1994, John underwent Ph.D. training in Molecular Parasitology and Molecular Immunology at Tulane University (New Orleans, LA) and New York University (New York, NY). From 1995 to 1996, John worked as Director of Technology Assessment and Research Associate at Nichols Institute – Quest Diagnostics (San Juan Capistrano, CA) where he started the Biotechnology Department. In 2001, John received his Juris Doctor law degree from Rutgers University School of Law (Newark, NJ) where he was Associate Editor of the Rutgers Computer and Technology Law Journal. During 2004, Dr. Martinez completed course-work toward an LL.M. degree in Intellectual Property concentrating in Patent Law and more specifically in Biotechnology Patent Law.

From 2004 to 2005, John worked as a Patent Law Clerk at Scully, Scott, Murphy and Presser (SSMP) in Garden City, NY and Patent Attorney at Pendorf and Cutliff (P&C) in Tampa, FL. At SSMP and P&C, John worked in the prosecution of Biotechnology patents, as well as, Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical, Chemistry, Mechanical and Laser patents.

John is admitted as an Attorney at Law in New Jersey (2001), New York (2002), and as a Patent Attorney before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He is member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the American Bar Association (ABA), the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and New Jersey Bar Association (NJBA).

John is fluent in Spanish.
